Dr. George L. Liggins
is a native of Roanoke, Virginia. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree
in biology from Hampton University, Hampton V A, a certificate of Medical
Technology from Meharry Medical College, Nashville TN, a Master of Public
Health degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a
Doctor of Philosophy degree in Microbiology from the University of Virginia.
Also, Dr. Liggins has completed postgraduate studies in the area of tumor
virology at New York's Cold Spring Harbor Research Laboratory and at two
San Diego Research Institutes, the Salk Institute and the Scripps Research
Institute.
Currently, Dr. Liggins is co-founder, owner and President of Bacton Assay
Systems, Inc., a biotechnology company located in San Marcos, California.
Prior to founding this company, he had achieved broad recognition as a
medical scholar, researcher and development manager for clinical diagnostic
products while employed by the Baxter Healthcare Division, Hyland Diagnostics.
After leaving Baxter, he was appointed to the positions of Chief Scientific
Officer and later President and COO of the diagnostic reagent manufacturing
company, International Immunology Corporation.
A highly active individual in his community, Dr. Liggins is Vice-President
of the Palomar College Foundation Board of Directors, a member of the
UCSD Cancer Center Foundation Board of Directors, and a member of the
California Governor's Bioscience Advisory Council. His professional activities
include memberships in the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), the
New York Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement
of Science (AAAS) and the American Association for Clinical Chemistry
(AACC). From 1996 through 1999, Dr. Liggins served as organizer and/or
chair of the AACC sponsored international conference on Nucleic Acids,
The San Diego Conference. He is an active alumnus of Hampton University
and currently serves as President of the San Diego Chapter of the National
Hampton Alumni Association.
