Congregations

The ENERGY STAR label stands for energy efficiency, which can support your congregation's concern for financial and environmental stewardship. EPA can assist your congregation in making decisions on your facilities and equipment that save money and prevent pollution.

Congregations that commit to substantial energy savings can cut utility costs 25-30%, and make significant contributions to a cleaner environment. If each of the nation's approximately 307,000 religious worship buildings (source: 1999 U.S. Department of Energy, Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey) cut its energy use and costs 25%:

  • Congregations would save nearly $500,000,000 to spend on their other priorities.
  • More than 13,500,000,000 kWh of electricity would be available with no new power plants.
  • More than 5 million tons of CO2 emissions would be prevented.

By saving money with energy efficiency, congregations could achieve the equivalent of removing about 1 million cars and their pollution from the road, or planting nearly 1.4 million acres of trees.

Download the no-cost ENERGY STAR for Congregations Guide: "Putting Energy into Stewardship" PDF (1.38MB) to learn ways that your congregation can achieve energy efficiency.

*This guidebook is intended to present a realistic look at energy efficiency practices but cautions that specific references to costs or performance characteristics are "typical". Actual values may vary depending upon location, climate, and manufacturer. The guidebook documents various energy efficiency options for saving energy in congregations, however, the EPA in no way recommends the use of energy efficiency products or practices that are contradictory to your personal beliefs.
