In addition to its headquarters and regional offices, the EPA maintains a network of laboratories that conduct cutting edge research and carry out scientific and technical activities within the fields regulated by the agency. This is done through direct implementation, partnerships with state, local and tribal governments, private industry and the academic community. Areas of study include: human health and ecological risk assessments; the integration of hazard, dose-response; the development of exposure data and models to produce risk characterizations; investigating clinical and epidemiological investigations to better understand human response to pollution; and the effects of contaminants and other stressors on the environment.
