The mission of the United States Horticultural Research Laboratory is to:
1. Develop new control methods for insect pests of citrus and other subtropical fruits and vegetables.
2. Conduct basic physiological, biochemical and pathological research on post-harvest problems of horticultural crops.
3. Develop new citrus scion and rootstock varieties that have enhanced tolerance to environmental stress, resistance to diseases and pests, and improved fruit quality and yield.
4. Conduct research on bacterial, fungal, nematode and viral diseases of subtropical crops to improve crop production.
5. Develop alternatives and solutions to environmental stresses that cause loss in crop growth, survival and production.
6. Develop alternatives to methyl bromide fumigation.
