Research Project:
Nutrient, Pesticide, and Water Management for Horticulture Crop and Water Quality Protection
Location:
Horticulture and Breeding Research
Project Number: 6618-13000-002-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: Feb 27, 2002
End Date: Feb 26, 2007
Objective:
Improve water conservation and reduce nutrient and pesticide accumulation in the irrigation of field and container-grown crops. Determine the fate and transport of nutrients and pesticides used on horticultural crops and potential for contamination of aquatic environments; develop management practices that reduce losses of nutrients and pesticides into water resources; and assess the potential of aquatic plants and algal species to purify horticultural runoff of excess nutrients and pesticides.
Approach:
Investigate improved methods of water delivery and use to optimize plant growth and enhance water conservation. Develop irrigation methods to prevent leaching of fertilizer elements and pesticides in runoff through improved methods of fertilizer, water and pesticide management. Determine the sensitivity of ornamental and turf species to salinity, trace elements, and pesticides.
