Research Project: Use of Wetland Systems to Treat Nursery Runoff

Location: Horticulture and Breeding Research

Project Number: 6618-13000-002-02
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 26, 2002
End Date: Sep 25, 2005

Objective:
To assess the potential of wetland systems to assimilate horticultural chemicals prior to entry into water bodies, and to assess the potential of ornamental plants to assimilate horticultural chemicals in urban landscapes to protect water quality.

Approach:
Monitor runoff water (volume and quality) entering and leaving a wetland system, and sample wetland sediments and plants for nutrients and pesticides of concern. Nutrient and pesticide balance will be calculated and the efficiency of the wetland system to remove horticultural chemicals will be determinded. Various landscape species will be evaluated in greenhouse and field trials for their ability to remove nutrients and pesticides from water.
