Research Project: Bioremediation Systems to Treat Nursery Runoff

Location: Horticulture and Breeding Research

Project Number: 6618-13000-002-04
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 26, 2002
End Date: Sep 25, 2005

Objective:
To assess the potential use of bioremediation filtration technologies for removing nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), and pesticides from runoff water generated from nursery crop production.

Approach:
This study will monitor N (nitrate + nitrite, ammonia, and total N), P (ortho-P and total P), and the breakdown/fate of selected pesticides in runoff water entering and leaving bioremediation systems under various nutrient and pesticide loadings and flow rates. Studies will initially be done under controlled conditions and then on a commercial nursery site.
