  • Summary and Analysis of Highway Diesel Fuel 2004 Pre-Compliance Reports - Any refiner or importer planning to produce or import highway diesel fuel in 2006-2010 is required to submit to EPA pre-compliance reports. This documents provides a summary and analysis of the reports that we received in June 2004, including comparisons to the reports received in June 2003. This preliminary information generally follows the trends that were found in the 2003 reports, namely that: 1) the industry is on target for complying with the 15 ppm sulfur standard on time; 2) highway diesel fuel production will be sufficient to meet demand; and 3) 15 ppm sulfur diesel fuel will be widely available nationwide (Office of Transportation and Air Quality).

  • Schools Chemical Cleanout Campaign - Every year, throughout the country, hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent on school incidents involving chemicals such as spills and fires. These incidents involve potentially dangerous chemicals which, in some cases, had been unused for more than thirty years. In addition to financial costs, these spills may also cause school closures that result in a loss of valuable education time. The Schools Chemical Cleanout Campaign (SC3) seeks to address this issue by not only cleaning out excess, legacy, unused, and improperly stored chemicals but also by going a step further and implementing preventive mechanisms in schools (Office of Solid Waste).

  • Biomarkers Database for the National Children's Study - This project is an update on a database that compiled relevant scientific literature to identify both routine and standardized biological markers as well as new and emerging biological markers that would be relevant to the National Children's Study. Citations are mostly review articles, beginning as early as 1996, and supplemented with searches of the recent primary research literature from 2001-June 2004. A new feature of the database is the capability of conducting a multiple term search within the same field. The User's Guide has been incorporated into the MS ACCESS 2000 database as part of the help function (National Center for Environmental Assessment).

  • Water Security: New dynamically driven water security web site live - Improving the security of our nation's drinking water and wastewater infrastructures has become a top priority since the events of 9/11. Significant actions are underway to assess and reduce vulnerabilities to potential terrorist attacks; to plan for and practice response to emergencies and incidents; and to develop new security technologies to detect and monitor contaminants and prevent security breaches. This Web site provides resources for water utilities, state and local governments, public health officials, emergency responders and planners, assistance and training providers, environmental professionals, researchers and engineers, and law enforcement, among others(Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water).

  • Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) - In July 2003, the United States hosted the Earth Observation Summit. The summit brought together 33 nations plus the European Commission to adopt a declaration that signified a political commitment toward the development of a comprehensive, coordinated and sustained Earth Observation System to collect and disseminate improved data, information, and models to stakeholders and decision makers. As part of that effort, EPA has provided state fact sheets detailing how Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) could be beneficial to each state (Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS)).
