Research Project: Determination of a Sodium Chlorate Dose That Results in Safe Concentrations of Tissue Residues in Beef Cattle

Location: Animal Metabolism-Agricultural Chemicals Research

Project Number: 5442-32000-008-02
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Jun 01, 2004
End Date: May 31, 2005

Objective:
The goal of the research is to protect consumers from chlorate residues potentially present in food animals. The proposed study will establish the chemical safety of food products from beef cattle treated with sodium chlorate.

Approach:
Cattle will be dosed with three doses of radiolabeled chlorate, animals slaughtered after a 24-hour withdrawal period, and total tissue residues measured. Metabolites in tissues will be measured and the regulated residue levels will be compared to provisional residue levels established by the US FDA.
