The signing of the 1996 Peace Accords ended 36 years of internal conflict in
Guatemala. The United States Government played an active role in aiding the
negotiations which resulted in the accords and has since made a large-scale
diplomatic and financial commitment to assisting Guatemala in the implementation of
the accords.
The U.S. is the largest single donor in support of the Guatemala Peace Accords. In
1997, the U.S. Government promised $270 million in assistance to Guatemala over a
four-year period. These funds are currently being used to carry out a variety of
projects designed to help achieve the goals laid out in the accords. For more
information on specific projects or on overall U.S. support for the Guatemalan Peace
Accords, please consult the
USAID webpage section on
Guatemala.
