What is the Mission of Bicycle Safety Programs?

Through education, enforcement, outreach and legislation, NHTSA's bicycle safety program goals are directed toward reducing bicycle injuries and fatalities. Bicycling is encouraged as an alternate mode of transportation to motor vehicle travel. Additional goals include: increasing the use of bicycle helmets, increasing awareness about sharing the road with cyclists and motorists, and promoting safe bicycle practices.

Bikeability Checklist (posted 07-11-03)
The Bikeability Checklist is a new tool designed to be used by adult and child cyclists to assess the conditions they encounter when biking in their communities. The checklist can serve as an educational tool by helping bicyclists identify potential obstacles that they may not have previously recognized. Suggestions on how to remedy problems encountered are provided at the end of the checklist. The 6-page, 2-color booklet is also availabe on the following website www.bicyclinginfo.org.
