Research Project: The Impact of Wetland Respiration on Phosphorus Release and Water Quality

Location: Soil and Water Management Research

Project Number: 3640-12130-003-03
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Oct 31, 2003
End Date: Aug 31, 2005

Objective:
Determine if midsummer increases in soluble phosphorus in the Pelican River Watershed are due to mineralization of respired soil organic matter.

Approach:
Water samples will be continuously collected by automated samplers at the inlet and outlet of the Rice Lake basin and analyzed for soluble and total P. These will be augmented by water level data provided by cooperators. Soil samples collected from the Rice Lake basin will be incubated in laboratory studies at a range of water contents and temperatures to determine relationships between respiration, oxygen status, and temperature. These data will then be used to develop a simple model to estimate P release in the basin as a function of weather and hydrology.
