Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is one of the world's preeminent botanic gardens, with extensive collections of rare tropical plants including palms, cycads, flowering trees and vines. Established in 1938, the 83-acre garden is among the region's most popular visitor attractions and offers a variety of programs in environmental education, conservation and horticulture. An international leader in tropical plant research, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden plays an important part in preserving the biodiversity of the tropical environment. 

The Kampong contains a fascinating array of flowering trees and tropical fruit cultivars. In the early 1900s, noted plant explorer David Fairchild searched the world for plants of economic and aesthetic value that might be cultivated in the United States. He and his wife Marian (daughter of Alexander Graham Bell) took up residence here amid some of his collections, borrowing the Malaysian word kampong for his home in a garden.

The U.S. National Arboretum, the District of Columbia Department of Health (DOH), and the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) have signed an historic agreement that will lead to the design, construction, and maintenance of a pollution abatement system to be installed on the grounds of the Arboretum as part of a watershed-wide program to reduce pollution loading in Hickey Run and the Anacostia River.

The Univ. of Florida’s Tropical Research and Education Center (IFAS-TREC) of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), University of Florida is located in Homestead, Florida about 30 miles south of Miami. The Center was established in 1929 by an act of the state legislature in what is now Miami-Dade County on land donated by the Krome family and Mr. Charles E. Schaff.
