Research Project: Biology and Epidemiology of Verticillium Wilt of Lettuce

Location: Crop Improvement and Protection Research

Project Number: 5305-21000-011-05
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 25, 2001
End Date: Dec 31, 2005

Objective:
Monitor the spread of the Verticillium wilt in the Salinas Valley. Determine if seed from wild Lactuca spp. carry Verticillium dahliae. Determine the seed borne nature of V. dahliae in lettuce. Determine the survival of seed borne inoculum. Identify sources of resistance in lettuce to Verticillium wilt.

Approach:
Survey lettuce field in the Salinas Valley. Collect seed from wild Lactuca spp. and test them for the presence of V. dahliae. Use a color marker to detect V. dahliae in lettuce. Collect seed from infected plants, expose them to various temperature treatments and then isolate the Pathogens. Screen germplasm and breeding lines in the greenhouse. Documents SCA with UC Davis. Formerly 5305-21000-010-06S (#58-5305-1-349). Addition of funds in amount of 15,000 and EOT.
