Research Project: Increasing Accuracy of Genetic Evaluations for Calving Ease

Location: Animal Improvement Programs

Project Number: 1265-31000-085-02
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Dec 01, 1999
End Date: Nov 30, 2004

Objective:
Maintain, improve the edits for, and update a database for research to determine the genetic and environment influences upon dystocia, and the relationship of it with other yield and fitness traits; conduct research to improve the National Calving Ease Genetic Evaluation including parameter estimation and model development.

Approach:
Increase the usability of information in the national dystocia database by revising edits to use the more complete pedigree file at AIPL. Investigate the feasibility of considering maternal genetic effects while using an ordered categorical (threshold) analysis procedure estimate parameters associated with potential models. Evaluate alternative models for goodness-of-fit.
