Research Project: Estimating Economic Contribution of Daughter Pregnancy Rate to Lifetime Net Merit

Location: Animal Improvement Programs

Project Number: 1265-31000-085-10
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Jul 01, 2003
End Date: Jun 30, 2005

Objective:
To provide an estimate of the economic value of a unit change in the PTA for Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) and to determine how the value should be adjusted for the part of the value that is currently accounted for by other traits in lifetime merit indexes.

Approach:
To isolate all cows born in a given year (perhaps1990) that have had an opportunity to complete a productive lifetime of at least 10 years. For each cow total lifetime production of milk, fat and protein [based on total actual production not 305 day performance], total number of calves (live and dead), total days open, and total days dry. Lifetime performance data will be translated into lifetime net income of each cow. These values will initially be regressed on sires PTA DPR in model that also includes herd. Additional analyses will be run adding the additional PTAs of Productive Life, Somatic Cell Score, and Yield traits to determine how the initial regression is impacted by including the additional traits.
