Research Project:
Improving Fitness in Dairy Cattle by Facilitating the Initiation of a National Research Database for Health Traits
Location:
Animal Improvement Programs
Project Number: 1265-31000-085-13
Project Type:
Specific C/A
Start Date: Sep 01, 2003
End Date: Aug 31, 2006
Objective:
Develop a system for routine collection, validation, and processing of data regarding the health of dairy cattle by facilitating the efforts of milk recording organizations, dairy records processing centers, animal breeding companies, university researchers, and government scientists.
Approach:
The cooperator will identify herds that routinely record detailed, high quality data on health and reproductive events in their on-farm herd management database. The cooperator will develop the necessary computer programs to download these data from the farms into a central database on a regular (e.g., weekly or monthly) basis. In addition, the cooperator will assess the degree of consistency in data recording across herds and across herd management software programs. The cooperator will also develop statistical measures of data quality and completeness, such that the usefulness of data from each (new) herd can be verified prior to inclusion in the aforementioned database. Following initial development of this database, the cooperator will recruit additional herds, and the cooperator will make the data from all herds available to USDA-AIPL research scientists and researchers at other public institutions.
