Mission:
The Waste Management and Forage Research Unit at Mississippi State, MS, executes solution oriented research to correct hazards of animal waste management. Solutions are expected to be effective, economically reasonable, and managerially realistic for the farmer. Hazards due to either nutrient pollution or microorganisms from the animal waste disposal is reduced by management of manure, modification of animal diet and environment, and development of agronomic systems. This research is curative, exploratory, and protective. Remediation of fields exposed to long-term waste applications is effected with removal of nutrients in harvested hay using aggressive management systems. Protective research reduces the nutrient concentration of nitrogen and labile phosphorus in the manure. Exploratory research determines effectiveness of poultry house or lagoon waste treatments to reduce impacts on the environment. Much of the cooperative research is effected on real farms to facilitate technology transfer and to measure responses under realistic solutions. Results will reduce potential hazards to the community without undue economic hardships to the farmer.
