Research Project:
Sampling, Seasonal Abundance and Comparative Dispersal of Gwss in Citrus and Grapes
Location:
WCRL Cotton Insect Pest Mgt/Biological Control/Genetics Research Unit
Project Number: 5344-22620-015-02
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Jun 01, 2001
End Date: May 31, 2005
Objective:
Develop, test and deliver statistically-sound sampling plans for estimating density and inoculum potential of GWSS for research and management application. Compare rates of movement between GWS and the native smoketree sharpshooter to help understand changes in spread of Pierce's disease. Correlate the effects of crowding, sex ratio, reproductive status, hostplant quality and environmental variables with population dynamics and movement of GWSS as an aid to predicting insect and disease spread.
Approach:
Four methods for sampling GWSS will be quantitatively compared in citrus orchards. The best method will be further used to define within and between plant distributions of all life stages of GWSS in citrus and and grapes and to develop and test efficient sampling plans for estimating GWSS density. The sampling plan will be further compared with current ad-hoc methods to determine the proportion of insects inoculative with xylella fastidiosa, the causal agent of Pierce's disease of grapes. Mark-release-recapture will be used to compare the dispersal of GWSS and the native smoke-tree sharpshooter from a point source in fallow fields. Season-long sampling surveys will correlate the effects of crowding, sex ratio, reproductive status, host-plant quality and environmental variables with population dynamics and movement of GWSS in citrus and grapes.
