Youth Tobacco Use and Exposure is a Global Problem

Fact Sheet

  • In a survey of 13 to15 year old students from 75 sites in 43 countries, current use of tobacco product ranges from nearly 63 percent (Nagaland Region, India) to just over 3 percent (Goa Region, India).

  • Current cigarette smoking ranges from 39.6 percent (Chile) to less than one percent (Goa Region, India)

  • Cigarette smoking among students in the United States was 17.7 percent, which was above the global median of 13.9 percent.

  • 83 percent of children were not refused purchase of cigarettes because of their age.

  • Over 20 percent of students smoked six or more cigarettes per day.

  • 68 percent of current smokers indicated a desire to quit smoking.

  • 80 percent of students had seen antismoking media messages.

  • 78 percent of students had been exposed to ads for cigarettes on billboards.

  • Almost half of the students reported that they were exposed to secondhand smoke from others in their homes.

  • Over 60 percent of students were exposed to cigarette smoking from others in public places.

  • 28 percent of students thought that boys who smoke have more friends.

  • 17 percent of students owned an object with a cigarette brand logo.

  • Nearly 25 percent of students smoked their first cigarette before the age of 10 years.
