Research Project: BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF SALTCEDAR IN NEW MEXICO

Location: Exotic and Invasive Weeds Research

Project Number: 5325-22000-017-18
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 24, 2001
End Date: Sep 30, 2005

Objective:
1)Conduct research of the biology & ecology of saltcedar in New Mexico and Texas. 2)Conduct biological control impact studies on Diohrabda elongata in New Mexico and Texas. 3. Evaluate new saltcedar natural enemies and their biological characteristics under quarantine conditions.

Approach:
A combination of field and laboratory studies will be used to assess the population dynamics of newly released natural enemies of saltcedar. Estimates of population growth and spread will be assessed in combination with assessments of impact of the target plant population. Standard protocols of insect and plant monitoring will be followed as developed by the Saltcedar Consortium. Basic rearing procedures & biological parameters will be developed for new natural enemies of saltcedar and host-specificity tests will be conducted under quarantine conditions.
