Research Project: INTEGRATED CONTROL AND ASSESSMENT OF KNAPWEED AND CHEATGRASS ON DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE INSTALLATIONS

Location: Exotic and Invasive Weeds Research

Project Number: 5325-22000-017-14
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Oct 01, 2000
End Date: Feb 18, 2005

Objective:
Improve management of non-indigenous invasive plant species (spotted and diffuse knapweed) by using a combination of manipulations that accelerate natural secondary succession.

Approach:
Combine the use of biological control, sucrose amendment (to reduce soil nitrogen), seeding with native plant species and inoculating soil microorganisms to reduce the abundance of spotted and diffuse knapweed at Yakima Training Center in Washington and Fort Carson in Colorado. We will release the insect biological control agents: Urophora affinis, U. quadrifasciata, Sphenoptera jugoslavica, Cyphocleonus achates, and Agapeta zoegana, and Larinus minutus. Insect populations and the effect on knapweed populations will be monitored over four years. Documents reimbursable with DOD. Log 19144.
