Research Project: Cuphea Development

Location: New Crops and Processing Technology Research

Project Number: 3620-41000-115-01
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Aug 01, 2000
End Date: Jan 30, 2005

Objective:
Develop new uses for cuphea oil and meal; develop cropping guidelines for cuphea; process cuphea seed to oil and meal.

Approach:
ARS will extract, separate, and characterize the components in cuphea seed. ARS will test the seed oil, meal, and unique components in various applications such as detergents, lubricants, plant and pest/disease control, nutriceutical and nutritional value. ARS will coordinate the development of cropping guidelines in the Midwest and North Central U.S. ARS will supply Proctor and Gamble with sufficient oil, detergents, or other derivatives for their own internal testing. Progress in yields, oil content, oil quaility, germination, etc. will be described relative to controls or baseline measurements a standard result for a previously grown cuphea cultivar or competitive material such as coconut oil or soybean meal. In as much as possible, the same group of growers will be used from year to year to minimize variation introduced by changing farms and growers. Funded by Proctor & Gamble.
