DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) supports social, behavioral, and economic research that builds fundamental knowledge of human behavior, interaction, and social and economic systems, organizations and institutions. The purpose of the ADVANCE initiative is to increase the representation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering careers, thereby contributing to the development of a more diverse science and engineering workforce. Through ADVANCE, NSF seeks to support new approaches to improving the climate for women in U.S. academic institutions and to facilitate women's advancement to the highest ranks of academic leadership. This will require significant institutional change and transformation in the nation's colleges and universities, and will demand close cooperation and collaboration between the Foundation and institutions and organizations in the public and not for profit sectors. Working with another ADVANCE Program Director, this position of Program Director has responsibility for developing a vision and a general plan, and for advising the AD/SBE and NSF senior management on the agency's new pilot initiative to increase the participation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering, within the framework of agency policies, legislation, and the NSF mission, goals, and resources. Provide leadership in the implementation of the ADVANCE initiative. Conducts outreach to inform the communities and the public about the initiative and its goals. Providing guidance to NSF leadership on the goals and implementation of ADVANCE, Manage the design and implementation of ADVANCE funding mechanisms provide oversight and coordination of $21M budget to fund awards for institutional transformation, leadership and individual research activities. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: For AD-4: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in one of the following; social, behavioral, physical, biological, geological, computer, or information sciences, economics, science education and engineering plus six or more years of research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position. QUALITY RANKING FACTORS: 1. Knowledge and understanding of institutional programs to support the advancement of women in research and research administration. 2. Ability to organize, implement and manage a proposal-driven grants program, allocating resources to meet a broad spectrum of program goals. 3. Knowledge of managerial and organizational concepts, principles, practices and techniques in order to plan, manage and direct multi-disciplinary and cross-functional teams. 4. Research analytical and technical writing skills that evidence the ability to perform extensive inquiry of significant issues and to make recommendations and decisions based on findings. 5. Ability to interact with members of the scientific community, private sector and peers to effectively present and advocate programs and policies.
