Cunningham Hosts Community Forum on Obesity-  Duke, with Dr. Barbara Alving, director of the National Heart Blood and Lung Institute, and Dr. Richard Spiegel director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, visited the the Scripps Whittier on Wheels mobile clinic following the community forum discussing the public health crisis of obesity. Duke has been a strong supporter of funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to combat this growing problem.  Cunningham, Alving and Spiegel joined San Diego county health advocates in discussing the growing obesity epidemic and its impact on cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other health concerns.  Participants were able to interact with San Diego public officials, medical researchers, health advocates and life science industry leaders who are committed to reducing death and disability from obesity related diseases.

Secretary England Names Newest U.S. Amphibious Transport in Honor of San Diego- Secretary of the Navy, Gordon R. England, has named the U.S. Navy’s newest amphibious transport dock ship (LPD 22) in honor of the city of San Diego. Additionally, Secretary England noted the longstanding relationship between the U.S. Navy and residents of San Diego. LPD 22 will play a vital role in the success of our Navy/Marine Corps team. It will carry joint combat forces to the fight with increased lift capacity, superior command and control capabilities and improved ship survivability. It will give Expeditionary Strike Groups greater speed, agility and reach, and will help us to dominate the near-land battlespace.

Report From Congress:

Click here to read my annual newsletter - an update on my efforts in Congress this year.

Washington Tour Update:

Due to a heightened state of alert for homeland security, FBI Headquarters and the Pentagon will be closed for tours until further notice. It is strongly recommended that other tours are requested at least five months in advance. If you have questions please contact Amy Donnoe in my D.C. office at (202) 225-5452.

Constituent Mail Update:

Due to concerns about contaminated mail and packages, all mail sent to Capitol Hill after October 12 has been quarantined and is being treated by the FBI as potential criminal evidence. That means that any constituent who recently sent a letter to my Washington office will experience a significant delay in response. Anyone who would like to contact me should do so via web mail or contact my Escondido office.
