McInnis Completes Quest: Great Sand Dunes Is Nation's Newest National Park

Washington, DC - The Great Sand Dunes became the Nation’s newest National Park today, capping over a decade long grassroots effort to achieve permanent protection for one of America’s great natural treasures. Interior Secretary Gale Norton, flanked by Colorado Congressman Scott McInnis, the driving legislative force behind establishment of the park, made the formal designation before an audience gathered at the Great Sand Dunes amphitheater.

Said McInnis, ”Words cannot describe the satisfaction I feel in completing this quest. The Great Sand Dunes National Park proposal was a community driven effort to achieve park status for this amazing natural wonder. It has been a long journey and I especially want to thank all of the devoted individuals and organizations that have worked with me to make this project a success. The designation of this park is a tribute to both the natural beauty of Colorado and the tireless dedication of numerous capable and committed individuals.” (read on…)

Grains of Sand Make Impressive New Park

North America’s highest sand dunes are now part of Colorado’s fourth national park. Great Sand Dunes National Monument was officially designated Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve on Monday by Secretary of Interior Gale Norton. It joins Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison among national parks in the state. (read on…)

President Signs Healthy Forests Bill

It’s not every day that President Bush signs a bill at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s headquarters building. In fact, he’s never done it before.

The special trip a few blocks from the White House was for the signing of the “Healthy Forest Restoration Act” in the presence of firefighters who fought blazes in Western states earlier this year. A key provision in the new law makes it easier for logging companies to thin trees in forests at risk for fires and for forest managers to clear out underbrush. (read on…)
