U.S. CONGRESSMAN PORTER INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO PROVIDE LAND FOR VA HOSPITAL
September 28, 2004
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Jon Porter (R-NV) has introduced the Foundation for Nevada’s Veterans Land Transfer Act of 2004 in the House of Representatives that would transfer 150 acres of land belonging to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to the Veterans Administration (VA) for development of a Veterans medical complex.
“I am very proud and honored to sponsor this legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives which will ensure that land becomes available for the VA to build Southern Nevada’s first ever Veterans hospital and medical complex,” said Rep. Porter who joined with VA Secretary Anthony Principi, and Interior Secretary Gale Norton to announce the site selection in Las Vegas today.
“A VA hospital is long over due for Southern Nevada Veterans, and I am committed to doing whatever I can to see this project completed. The VA medical complex will be a state of the art facility that will provide a high quality of service that our veterans deserve,” Porter added.
A hospital, nursing home, and outpatient clinic are part of the $250 million VA medical complex to be constructed on the 150 acre site at Pecos Road and the Las Vegas Beltway in North Las Vegas. It is expected to take 3-5 years to complete.
U.S. Senator John Ensign (R-NV) has sponsored a similar legislation in the Senate.
