SCHAKOWSKY EXTENSION OF REMARKS IN OPPOSITION TO

H.R. 10 - THE SO-CALLED 9/11 RECOMMENDATIONS

IMPLEMENTATION ACT

(October 8, 2004) Mr. Speaker, I rise today in opposition to H.R. 10, the so-called 9/11 Recommendations Implementation Act.  At a time when our national security is at risk and our brave troops are fighting overseas, it is shameful that the Republican leadership has chosen to present a partisan bill that that does not effectively implement the recommendations of the bipartisan 9/11 Commission.  In fact, of the Commission’s 41 recommendations, H.R. 10 only fully implements eleven.  Fifteen are not implemented at all, and another 15 are incomplete...

SCHAKOWSKY EXTENSION OF REMARKS IN OPPOSITION TO H.R. 4520 - THE AMERICAN JOBS

CREATION ACT

Corporate Subsidies at the Expense of the American Worker

(October 8, 2004) I rise today in opposition to H.R. 4520, the so-called American Job Creations Act, because it is just another example of the Republicans’ seriously misplaced priorities. Instead of closing corporate tax loopholes to fund housing, education, and veterans’ programs, the Republicans decided to give 276 new tax breaks in industries from oil and gas corporations to tackle boxes and ceiling fans makers. Instead of encouraging companies to create jobs in the U.S, the Republicans chose to reward companies that export jobs overseas. Instead of helping six million working families make ends meet, the Republicans decided to strip the overtime protections in the Senate bill and erode the 40-hour work week. Instead of regulating tobacco, a drug that kills 400,000 people every year, the Republicans gave tobacco companies a bail out...

Schakowsky - “Child Product Safety: Do Current Standards Provide Enough Protection?”

(Oct. 6, 2004) WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) continued to press for improved children’s product safety standards in order to keep dangerous products from ever making it onto store shelves or into nurseries, child care centers or homes.  Schakowsky, ranking member of the Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection Subcommittee, called on Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman Stratton to change his agency’s culture from one that is slow to react to dangerous products to one that is ready to immediately protect the consumer.

Schakowsky Extension of Remarks in Opposition to H.R. 163, a Bill to Reinstate the Draft

(Oct. 6, 2004) "Mr. Speaker, I rise today to oppose H.R. 163, a bill to reinstate the draft.  Rumors of a military draft have been flying around the Internet and the possibility has been discussed at millions of lunch and dinner tables all over the country.  Constituents, especially those with kids and grand-kids, have called me to ask, “Is this true?” The answer is no.  We will defeat this bill today.  But that doesn’t mean that American families don’t have to worry about a draft—a backdoor draft..."

Schakowsky - Remarks on H.R. 2929:  The Securely Protect Yourself Against Cyber Trespass Act (Spy Act)

(Oct. 5, 2004) "...The Spy Act is a bill whose time has come.  As we have learned from others and from our own experiences, people are increasingly finding that their home webpages have been changed or that their computers are sluggish.  They get pop-up ads that will not go away no matter how many times they try to close them.  They find software on their computer that they did not install and that they cannot uninstall.  Their computers are no longer their own – and they cannot figure out why.  They think that the problem is with their computer, with a faulty program they installed, or with their Internet service provider.  But, more and more often, it is becoming clear that they are the unwitting victims of spyware – software that can collect personal information, track web usage, and adversely affect computers’ performance..."

Schakowsky Statement - Protecting the Privacy of Consumers’ Social Security Numbers

(Sept. 29, 2004) "...Identity theft is one of the fastest growing financial crimes in the United States with the number of victims doubling each year over the past three years.  As the Federal Trade Commission reports, in 2003 there were nearly 10 million Americans victimized by this crime. Over the past five years, there have been 27 million victims.  Both of our states, Chairman Stearns, rank in the top 10 for identity theft occurrences.  (Florida is 5th, Illinois is 9th.)..."

BUSH ADMINISTRATION MISSTATEMENT OF THE DAY –

IRAQI DEFENSE FORCES

(Sept. 28, 2004) On Thursday, President Bush claimed that:

"Nearly 100,000 fully trained and equipped Iraqi soldiers, police officers, and other security personnel are working today."

- President Bush, Press Conference, Sept. 23, 2004

However, the Pentagon said last Monday that of these “nearly 100,000 fully trained and equipped Iraqi soldiers” only about 53,000 Iraqi troops have undergone training.

In addition, Reuters reports that of the nearly 90,000 Iraqis currently in the police force, only 8,169 have had the full eight-week academy training. And it will be July 2006 before the administration's new goal of 135,000 fully trained police is met.

Schakowsky Statement - Repairing the 21st Century Car:  Is Technology Locking the Consumer Out?

(Sept. 22, 2004) "...Many of the technological changes in car design and maintenance have made cars safer and more environmentally sound.  The changes have truly been advances.   However, they have also created new challenges for the consumer and for independent repair shops.  Consumers are finding that they cannot take their cars to the repair shop of their choice.  Repair shops are finding they must refer their customers to dealers for repairs they cannot do.  Those experiences are not because the mechanics are not capable, but because they cannot get the information they need – or they cannot get the information they need in a timely fashion – to make the necessary repairs..."

Schakowsky Condemns Bush Administration and House Republicans’ Decision Allow Assault Weapons Ban to Expire

Says Result Will Be Weakened National Security, More Treacherous Work for Law Enforcement Personnel

(Sept. 13, 2004) WASHINGTON, DC - “I rise to mark the day that the Republican leadership and President Bush have allowed deadly, fully automatic assault weapons back onto our streets.  President Bush and his Republican colleagues never miss an opportunity to talk about homeland security, yet they have failed to renew legislation to keep assault weapons off our streets, making our nation less secure..."

Schakowsky Statement - Publication and Disclosure Issues in Anti-Depressant Pediatric Clinical Trials

Hearing by the Subcommittee on

Oversight & Investigation

(Sept. 10, 2004) "...I am very pleased that the subcommittee has decided to look into the failure of some drug manufacturers and the FDA to disclose to pediatricians and the public the results of clinical trials aimed at determining the efficacy of anti-depressants in children.

I would like to understand why the system that was supposedly put into place to protect children from the potential side effects of ineffective medications, allowed for such a breach of trust to occur..."

SCHAKOWSKY STATEMENT  - Examining Professional Boxing: Are Further Reforms Needed?

Hearing by the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection

(Sept. 10, 2004) "...With the passage of the Professional Boxing Safety Act in 1996, soon followed by the Mohammed Ali Act in 2000, minimum standards were set to protect the physical and economic well-being of the boxer and each state boxing commission was charged with meeting those standards. While some states, such as Pennsylvania and Nevada, have strong boxing commissions that go well beyond the minimum federal requirements, there is still concern that other states are ignoring the regulations..."

As United Nations Deadline on Sudan passes, Schakowsky Denounces Inadequate Efforts by the Government of Sudan to Rein in Janjaweed Militia and to Stop the Genocidal killing in Darfur

Urges President Bush and Congressional Republicans to Take Time out of Convention Schedule to Exert Decisive U.S. leadership at United Nations to Help Sudan’s Civilian Population

(Aug. 30, 2004) CHICAGO, IL - "...As the August 30th deadline set by the United Nations Security Council for progress in Sudan has come and gone without adequate improvement in the Darfur crisis, it is clear today that President Bush must do more.  Over 50, 000 have already been killed in Darfur and the killing continues. The international community gave the government of Sudan 30 days to demonstrate real progress in disbanding the Janjaweed militiamen who have ravaged the civilian population of Darfur.  Yet, human rights groups, the United Nations and civilians in Darfur are still reporting the need for improved security in light of credible accounts of government collaboration with Janjaweed murderers and ongoing abuse of civilians..."
