Drug Bill: Too Much Risk for Too Little Benefit

"Bobby" Scott (D-VA-03) voted against the so-called
Medicare prescription drug bill (HR 1) because it offers minimal
benefit, but high costs and high risks that threaten the fundamental
structure of Medicare. While most of the public attention has been
focused on the prescription drug premium, co-payment, deductible,
and "doughnut hole," most of the true effect of the bill
is the long-term erosion of guaranteed, universal coverage under
Medicare. more
Scott Amendment Denied...
October 17, 2003
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Robert C. “Bobby” Scott,
(D-VA-3), was denied an opportunity today to offer an extended
deployment pay amendment to the $87 billion Iraq Supplemental
Appropriations bill debated this week in Congress. In a 221 - 201
vote on Friday afternoon, the House of Representatives voted to
block further amendments [including Congressman Scott's] and debate
on the bill. Scott’s amendment would have increased pay by $1000
per month for Reservists, National Guard members and active duty
troops who serve in excess of six months on active duty in Iraq and
the surrounding countries. more
