Congressman Serrano Presents $250,000 Check to Casita Maria (10/29/2004)
Bronx, NY, October 29, 2004— Congressman José E. Serrano (NY-16) was at Casita Maria’s headquarters in the Bronx today to present a check to the community service group for $250,000 in federal funding. This funding, secured through the Fiscal Year 2004 Commerce-Justice-State Appropriations bill, will serve as seed money for a multiyear after-school and day camp program that will offer at-risk elementary and secondary school students a chance to get assistance on their schoolwork and enrich their education experience with arts, writing, and literacy classes.

Congressman Serrano Criticizes Attempt to Cripple the Community Reinvestment Act (10/25/2004)
Washington, DC, October 25, 2004—Today, Congressman José E. Serrano (D-NY) responded to attempts by the Bush Administration to water down the Community Reinvestment Act. Regulatory changes proposed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and already in effect at the Office of Thrift Supervision will reduce the number of banks that must adhere to the successful Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). The CRA was put into place as a result of decades of ‘red-lining’ practices by banks that cordoned off poor, minority and rural communities from bank loans, services, and investment. Since 1977, the CRA has resulted in billions of dollars being channeled to communities previously ignored by banks and other community lenders.

A First Step Towards the Draft: Medical Workers (10/20/2004)
Washington, DC, October 20, 2004—Today, Congressman José E. Serrano (D-NY) expressed outrage over a report by the Selective Service recommending a plan for a draft of doctors, nurses, and other health care workers during times of crisis. An article in yesterday’s New York Times exposed the confidential report, which detailed how such a draft might work and how public opinion could be manipulated.

Congressman Serrano helped lead the House in opposing President Bush's most recent attempt to tighten the embargo against Cuba by preventing Cuban Americans from visiting their families more than once every three years and severely restricting the sending of packages of home supplies. Under the administration's restrictions, which the House voted to roll back late Wednesday (July 7), Americans are barred from sending everything from veternary supplies to personal hygiene items to their families living in Cuba. |
