Tax
Relief Benefits Taxpayers and Economy
Earlier this month, President George Bush signed
into law legislation extending the life of major
Federal tax relief passed in 2001 and 2003. Without
this extension, taxes on married couples and working
Americans would have increased next year, while
child tax credits recently enacted would have
been slashed. The tax relief extension is not
only good for taxpayers, but for the economy as
a whole.
Protecting
and Promoting American Jobs
Data released two weeks ago indicate that nearly
two million new American jobs have been created
since August 2003. The current national unemployment
rate of 5.4 percent remains lower than the average
jobless level during the 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's.
Despite these gains in the workplace, clearly
more can and must be done to ensure that every
American wanting a job, gets one. Congress is
working with the President to make that happen.
Rumors
of Impending Military Draft are Unfounded
In the age of the Internet and lightning fast
communication, rumors spread like wildfire and

not to verify them. A classic example is the rumor
of an impending return of the military draft.
It has assumed a life of its own and has become
so widespread that Congress took an usual step
last week to address it.
Protecting
Family Values an Uphill Battle in Congress
This year has been a roller coaster ride of emotion
in the U.S. Congress as lawmakers faced some critical
votes on the moral direction of our nation. Issues
ranging from protecting the Pledge of Allegiance
to preserving the sanctity of marriage have come
before the U.S. House of Representatives. While
total victory remains elusive, the battle over
family values in Washington and across the nation
is only just beginning.
