2005 Defense Bill Clears Conference with BRAC Go-Ahead
The $445 billion 2005 Defense Authorization Act Conference Report has been approved by a House-Senate defense conference committee, announced Congressman Terry Everett, R-Rehobeth. The new defense bill was stripped of earlier House language delaying the 2005 BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure Commission) round by two years.

Tax Relief Benefits Taxpayers and Economy
Earlier this month, President George Bush signed into law legislation extending the life of major Federal tax relief passed in 2001 and 2003. Without this extension, taxes on married couples and working Americans would have increased next year, while child tax credits recently enacted would have been slashed. The tax relief extension is not only good for taxpayers, but for the economy as a whole.

Protecting and Promoting American Jobs
Data released two weeks ago indicate that nearly two million new American jobs have been created since August 2003. The current national unemployment rate of 5.4 percent remains lower than the average jobless level during the 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's. Despite these gains in the workplace, clearly more can and must be done to ensure that every American wanting a job, gets one. Congress is working with the President to make that happen.

Rumors of Impending Military Draft are Unfounded
In the age of the Internet and lightning fast communication, rumors spread like wildfire and are too often taken as truth by many who choose not to verify them. A classic example is the rumor of an impending return of the military draft. It has assumed a life of its own and has become so widespread that Congress took an usual step last week to address it.

Protecting Family Values an Uphill Battle in Congress
This year has been a roller coaster ride of emotion in the U.S. Congress as lawmakers faced some critical votes on the moral direction of our nation. Issues ranging from protecting the Pledge of Allegiance to preserving the sanctity of marriage have come before the U.S. House of Representatives. While total victory remains elusive, the battle over family values in Washington and across the nation is only just beginning.
