    Representative Lewis' Committee Assignments

  House Ways and Means Committee

The House Ways and Means committee has a broad jurisdiction that includes tax policy, trade, Social Security, Medicare and welfare programs.  The committee's large area of responsibility makes it one of the most influential in the House.  I serve on three of the committee's six subcommittees.

Subcommittee on Social Security: This subcommittee oversees the Social Security and will be responsible for finding ways to make the program stable for future generations.

Human Resources Subcommittee:  This year the subcommittee is focusing on updating welfare reform.  Other areas the subcommittee works on include disability and unemployment compensation and child and family protection.

Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures: The Select Revenue Subcommittee looks at how tax proposals affect our economy.  One tax topic of interest to me is reform of the income tax code.

  House Committee On Government Reform

The Government Reform Committee serves as the House of Representative's chief oversight and investigative body.

Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations: I asked to serve on this subcommittee because of my interest in maintaining Fort Knox's role as a premiere training site for the U.S. Army.  The subcommittee has also taken an increasing role in evaluating the military and our nation's capabilities to fight terrorism.
