Mission:
The mission of the research thrust at Prosser, Washington, is to design profitable, sustainable, and environmentally safe management systems for irrigated agriculture by means of: 1) enhancing alfalfa, bean, pea, and potato germplasm with resistance to abiotic and biotic stress, which can begrown with reduced reliance on pesticides and chemical inputs; 2) reducing the economic impact of viral and fungal diseases and weeds of these crops; and 3) developing decision-support technologies necessary for growers and managers of irrigated farms where these crops are grown. Major emphasis isplaced on developing and genetically enhancing multiple disease, pest, and environmental stress resistant alfalfa, beans, peas, and potatoes with improved horticultural/agronomic traits and food or forage value. Researchis underway to determine the cause and control of various fungal and viral diseases of the above crops and the economic impact of these diseases. Alsounderway is research to develop cropping systems for potatoes and legumes, including rotational crops, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, tillage residue management, soil-water relations, soil nitrogen, and organic matter cycles.
