AHRF SAYS GOODBYE TO OUR FOUNDER


Eugene L. Derlacki
1913-2004

Eugene L. Derlacki, M.D., co-founder with George Shambaugh Jr. of the American Hearing Research Foundation and its predecessor, the Midwest Hearing Research Foundation, died on July 21, 2004 at his home in Corvallis, Oregon. Dr. Derlacki's contributions to advancements in the field of Otolaryngology were legendary. Dr. Derlacki receive his B.S. from Northwestern University and 1936 and his M.D. from Northwestern Medical School in 1939. He served an internship and a residency in otolaryngology Cook County Hospital and Chicago. During WWII, Dr. Derlacki served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific.While maintaining a private practice, he also taught at the Northwestern Medical School as Professor of Otolaryngology and Maxillofacial Surgery. He published over sixty scientific papers and made numerous educational movies. He was in constant demand as a speaker at medical conferences throughout the world.
Since 1958, Dr.Derlacki held numerous offices with both foundations including Vice President (1956-1977), President (1978-1987), President Emeritus (1982-1998), President (1998-2002) and President Emeritus (2003-2004). He served as the President of the American Academy of Opthalmology and Otolaryngology and became the first President of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 1978. He served in many capacities in this Academy including Secretary of the Instructional Courses in Otolaryngology for seventeen years and was elected to the Council of the American Otological Society in 1975, serving as its President from 1979 to 1980.

Dr. Derlacki's wife, Roberta, died in 1999. He is survived by his daughters Deborah Jean Derlacki of Chicago and Judith Trail of Powell, Ohio, as well as his brother, Walter, of Corvallis and his granddaughters Valerie and Vanessa Trail. Gene, as we affectionately called him, was the consummate physician. He was an articulate teacher and leader. He was quick to console all those who suffered afflictions and loss. He was a loyal friend and confidante.

Long will he live in our hearts.

In Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) dizziness is thought to be due to debris that has collected within a part of the inner ear. This debris can be thought of as "ear rocks," although the formal name is otoconia.
