Research Project: Screening Wild Potatoes for Antioxidants

Location: Vegetable Crops Research Unit

Project Number: 3655-21000-039-03
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 07, 2001
End Date: Sep 06, 2006

Objective:
Discover new sources of antioxidants in exotic potato relatives so these can be used in breeding to increase dietary intake in US and world consumers.

Approach:
Tubers of wild species will be generated. Antioxidants will be extracted and allowed to react with the stable radical, 2,2,-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). This provided an easy and rapid evaluation of the antiradical activities of the potato extracts based on absorbance.
