Research Project:
Rearing Four Species of Insects for Host Plant Resistance Research
Location:
Genetics and Precision Agriculture Research
Project Number: 6406-21000-010-05
Project Type:
Specific C/A
Start Date: Jun 20, 2000
End Date: Apr 30, 2005
Objective:
Provide advice, guidance, and technical assistance on procedures and protocols for rearing small colonies of tobacco budworm and bollworm. Assist in insect disease identification and control for a small scale insect rearing program. Advise on diapause storage of overwintering pupa for each colony.
Approach:
Rearing protocols will be developed for personnel to follow. A minimum of two visits each week will be made by cooperator to observe the health and vigor of the tobacco budworm and bollworm colonies. Written reports will be provided to ARS on status of colonies following these visits. Suggestions will be made when changes are needed. Once each year the laboratory colonies will be crossed to wild insects to keep diversity in the colonies. If diseases are introduced in this crossing, proper procedures to eliminate the disease and develop disease-free colonies will be advised. Following the cross, to wild disease-free insects will be reared in conditions that cause diapause. Diapausing pupa will be kept over the winter at temperatures that will keep them in dipause. The following spring, the pupa will be placed in conditions to break diapause and new colonies will be started for the year. Advice on timing and specifics of these operations will be made at the proper time.
