Research Project:
Surface Contaminant Detection with Nir Hyperspectral System
Location:
Poultry Processing and Meat Quality Research
Project Number: 6612-42000-034-04
Project Type:
Specific C/A
Start Date: Jul 22, 2004
End Date: Jul 21, 2006
Objective:
To evaluate a near infrared hyperspectral imaging system operating between 900 and 1700 nm, including broad-spectrum lighting in the near-infrared region, for potential use in detecting surface contaminants on poultry carcasses.
Approach:
A near infrared (NIR) hyperspectral imaging system will be evaluated to determine the feasibility of fecal contaminant detection on poultry carcasses and other poultry products. A lighting system, providing broad-spectrum illumination up to 1700 nm, will be designed and constructed. The NIR imaging system will then be used to image contaminants on poultry carcasses to determine if there are suitable wavelengths between 900 and 1700 nm in the near infrared region that could be used to identify fecal and other contaminants. Algorithms will be explored to improve the detection accuracy. If improved accuracies are found, then a new common aperture camera system, which was previously developed by ARS, will be modified and tested for real-time on-line contaminant detection.
