Research Project:
Integrated Restoration Strategies Towards Weed Control on Western Rangelands
Location:
Forage and Range Research
Project Number: 5428-21000-006-05
Project Type:
Reimbursable
Start Date: Jun 01, 2002
End Date: Sep 14, 2005
Objective:
Provide seed of selected native grass populations to the University of Nevada-Reno to evaluate for competition with cheatgrass, an annual weed of great significance in the Great Basin. Determine differences between soils underlying invasive cheatgrass monocultures and adjacent soils underlying native perennial vegetation. Evaluate establishment of cheatgrass and desirable perennial grasses in plots subjected to different weed-control treatments.
Approach:
We will raise seed locally of various native grasses needed for the experiments. Because this involves small plots, seed will be harvested by hand and cleaned with small equipment. Soil samples will be taken from excavated pits and will be subjected to chemical and physical analysis. Establishment of seeded perennial grasses in plots will be determined using a standard within-row counting procedure.
