Research Project: APPLICATION OF YEAST TO CONTROL AFLATOXIN IN TREE-NUTS AND CORN

Location: Plant Mycotoxin Research

Project Number: 5325-42000-031-11
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Apr 01, 2004
End Date: Mar 31, 2006

Objective:
WRRC and SWO will work together on a CRADA to reduce or eliminate costly problems with aflatoxin. Saprophytic yeast discovered by WRRC will be field tested by SWO and registered for commercialization

Approach:
1) Further characterize the yeast, Pichia anomala in order to correlate yeast parameters with field data. 2) Develop suitable fermentation media towards optimization of mass production of yeast by SWO and subsidiaries. 3) Test method to prolong the shelf-life of yeast strain. 4) In response to field data, develop methods to improve formulation of biocontrol yeast. 5) Analyze microflora on corn and screen for additional effective yeast to control Aspergillus flavus. Documents CRADA with Smart World Organics. (Formerly 5325-42000-032-04T - 09/04)
