Research Project: Monitoring for Potential Recessive Resistance in Bollworm/tobacco Budworm to Protein Toxins in Bt Cotton

Location: Southern Insect Management Research Unit

Project Number: 6402-22000-035-38
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: May 01, 2003
End Date: Dec 31, 2006

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to search for, identify, and evaluate levels of recessive resistance of bollworm/tobacco budworm to toxic proteins in Bt cotton.

Approach:
Mated bollworm and tobacco budworm moths collected in light traps will be allowed to lay eggs in the laboratory and hatching larvae will be placed on artificial diet containing a sublethal dose of Cry1Ac protein. Percent mortality and size (instar or weight) of any surviving larvae will be reported after 7 days and compared to larvae from a susceptible colony of each species.
