Research Project: Epidemiology Applied to Problems of Aging and Nutrition

Location: Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging

Project Number: 1950-51530-005-01
Project Type: General C/A

Start Date: Oct 01, 1998
End Date: Sep 30, 2003

Objective:
To define diet and nutritional needs of older Americans. To advance methods in nutritional epidemiology. To relate antioxidant micronutrients and folate to cataract and age related maculopathy. To relate nutrition to the function of the aging kidney, skeletal system, and cardiovascular system. To define changes in body composition associated with aging. To relate vitamin B12 and B6 and folate to hyperhomocysteinemia, neurobehavioral and cognitive function.

Approach:
Nutritional surveys, especially longitudinal ones. Development of dietary methods specific to older Americans, especially ethnic minorities. Comparison of diet intake over time. Longitudinal and prospective studies relating diet and tissue nutrient levels to cataract and maculopathy. A) Use of survey data (HANES I, II, III) to relate diet to changing organ and system function. B) Diet, vitamin D levels and bone density, and diet and heart disease in the Framingham Heart Study. C) Vitamin C and HDL cholesterol. Metanalysis of the St. Luke's Hospital/Brookhaven National Laboratory Program Project. Assess nutrition (vitamin B12 and B6 and folacin) and neurocognitive function. Develop strategy and assessment for preventive nutrition in the elderly, particularly nutritional screening.
