Research Project: Mating Disruption for Suppression of Navel Orangeworm Damage in Pistachios

Location: Commodity Protection and Quality

Project Number: 5302-43000-031-04
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Jan 30, 2003
End Date: Jul 31, 2005

Objective:
The objectives of this project are to examine the feasibility of mating disruption for control of navel orangeworm in pistachios, and to compare population dynamics and examine possible movement between pistachios and other host crops (i.e., almonds and figs).

Approach:
Unmated female navel orangeworm will be produced and deployed for use as bait in flight traps used to monitor abundance of males and the ability of mating disruption treatments to prevent location of females by males. Mating assays will also be used to examine the impact of mating disruption treatments, and oviposition baits for female moths will be used to complement female-baited traps for males in the population dynamics portion of the study. Documents Trust with CA Pistachio Commission. Log 23594.
