Research Project: Field Evaluation of Condidate Biocontrol Fungi to Control Sugarbeet Root Maggot

Location: Pest Management Research Unit

Project Number: 5436-22000-010-02
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Jun 01, 2002
End Date: May 31, 2006

Objective:
Evaluate the field efficacy of candidate insect pathogenic fungi being investigated by ARS NPARL, Sidney for the control of the sugarbeet root maggot, Tetanops myopaeformis, in the Red River Valley growing region. Determine compatibility of these fungi with cover cropping practices being developed by North Dakota State University.

Approach:
Evaluations will be field trials of the candidate fungi applied either at planting or at peak fly, wherein efficacy will be determined by measurements of root damage and yields, compared to untreated control and chemical standard plots. Fungus applications will be integrated with biological disease control agents developed by Montana State University, and with cultural practices (cover cropping) identified by North Dakota State University. Data about the persistence of the entomopathogenic fungi and microenvironmental measurements will also be collected. The cover crop component will also be evaluated with greenhouse experiments at NDSU, Fargo.
