Research Project: UTILIZATION OF CRYSTALLINE AMINO ACIDS

Location: Swine Odor and Manure Management Research

Project Number: 3625-31000-002-02
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Sep 10, 2003
End Date: Feb 28, 2005

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to evaluate the absorption of amino acids in pigs fed intact proteins or diets containing crystalline amino acids.

Approach:
Pigs will be fitted with multiple organ cannulations to obtain blood samples for subsequent plasma amino acid analysis. This data will be utilized to assess absorption of amino acids from protein-bound or crystalline amino acid sources in an effort to determine if they are digested and utilized differently. Consequently, this may affect the ability to reduce dietary crude protein levels through the inclusion of crystalline amino acids, and subsequently, the excretion of nitrogen and ammonia into the environment.
