Steven J. Law was nominated by President George W. Bush and confirmed by
the United States Senate on December 9, 2003 as the Deputy Secretary of Labor.
He formerly served the President and Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao as Chief
of Staff.
In this role, Steven Law serves as the Chief Operating Officer, directs
the Secretarys senior executive team, manages budget and policy
development, congressional and public affairs, and strategic planning for the
$72.6 billion, 17,000 employee federal agency. He has played a major role in
crafting major Administration initiatives such as post-9/11 economic recovery,
retirement security, and regulatory reform.
Steven Law has a record of building and managing results-oriented teams.
As Executive Director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, he led
the organization out of an inherited debt and into record-breaking financial
success. He assisted Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao in assembling the
Department of Labors senior leadership-viewed as one of the most
high-quality teams in the Administration-and working with them to fulfill key
objectives.
Steven Law has been a top Senate leadership aide and was recognized as
one of the fifty most influential staffers on Capitol Hill. He served as
counsel to the Chairman of the Senate Ethics Committee and played a major role
in its historic decision to expel a sitting Senator.
Mr. Law was born in Oakland, California, and grew up in Saudi Arabia. He
later graduated cum laude from the University of California, Davis, with
a Bachelor of Arts in music composition. He went on to receive a Juris Doctor
from the Columbia University School of Law, where he was named a Harlan Fiske
Stone Scholar. He is a member of the Bars of the United States Supreme Court,
New York State, and the District of Columbia.
Today, Steven Law lives on Capitol Hill with his wife and two
children.
