Title: REULIST -- Current List of REU Sites Date: January 2002 THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION "RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR UNDERGRADUATES" PROGRAM Introduction The National Science Foundation makes possible a number of opportunities for undergraduates to join research projects each summer. This allows students to experience first-hand how basic research is carried out, and to contribute consequentially. The principal support by NSF of such activities is through the Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program. REU "Sites" are established in all fields of science, mathematics, and engineering. Each Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates, who work in the research programs of the host institution. Students are in general accepted from throughout the country. Each student is assigned to a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty, post-docs, and graduate students. In addition, seminars, lunch meetings, and social functions are organized to facilitate interaction between the undergraduates. Students are granted stipends, and in some cases assistance with housing and travel. Students who are in those groups traditionally under-represented in science (women, members of under-represented minorities, and those with disabilities) are particularly urged to apply. Students with special personal needs or requirements, or who can attend a Site only under special conditions, are also encouraged to apply, and to discuss this with Site Directors in advance of the application dates. We attach lists of all the REU Sites, and of some other activities supported by NSF that have similar summer programs. These lists should be checked periodically. Contact each Site directly for specific information, and for application procedures and deadlines. This allows students to experience first-hand how basic research is carried out, and to contribute consequentially. Students who are in those groups traditionally under-represented in science (women, members of under-represented minorities, and those with disabilities) are particularly urged to apply. An increasing number of Sites can meet the needs of physically challenged students. Students with special personal needs or requirements, or who can attend a Site only under special conditions, are also encouraged to apply, and to discuss their needs with Site Directors in advance of the application dates. The principal support by NSF of such activities is through the Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program. REU Sites are established in all fields of science, mathematics, and engineering. REU Sites in physics, materials, and astronomy are supported by three NSF Divisions: The Division of Physics supports Sites that span all areas of physics research with a few including some components of astronomy and astrophysics. The Division of Materials Research supports Sites that focus principally on research in condensed matter physics and materials. The Division of Astronomical Sciences supports Sites that comprise principally research in astronomy and astrophysics, with a few including research in some aspects of physics. In addition, two groups of Laboratories have summer programs that involve undergraduates in research in physics or materials studies: The Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers have broad-ranging research programs in condensed matter physics and materials. The Science and Technology Centers are each focused on a range of research indicated by their titles. We attach lists of these various Sites, Laboratories, and Centers that will host groups of undergraduates. Each of the following institutions will take in a group of (usually) ten to fifteen undergraduates, who participate in the on-going research of the host department or laboratory. Unless otherwise noted, students are accepted from throughout the country. Each student will be assigned to a specific research project, where he/she will work closely with the faculty, post-docs, and graduate students. In addition, seminars, lunch meetings, and social functions will be organized to facilitate interaction between the undergraduates. Students will be granted stipends, and in some cases assistance with housing and travel. Those interested should contact the institutions directly for application forms and details of the research topics open to undergraduates. Further information about ongoing and new activities can be obtained by inquiring of the NSF Division of Astronomical Sciences [(703) 292-4910; reu.ast@nsf.gov], Materials Research [(703) 292-4915; reu.dmr@nsf.gov], or Physics [(703) 292-7370; reu.phy@nsf.gov]. Information on other similar summer programs in physics and allied fields supported by other federal agencies can be found at can be found http://web.fie.com/fedix/, and (for the Department of Energy) at: http://ep.llnl.gov/, http://www.sandia.gov/Employ/SIP.htm, http://www.orau.gov/doe_erulf/, and http://wind.mcs.anl.gov:80/mathmodeling/resoptu.html. The American Physical Society supplies further information on such programs at http://www.research.att.com/~kbl/APS/. These lists are updated frequently so check them often. Students are encouraged to consider other research activities as well, such as those in Chemistry, Biology, Computing, Engineering, Geology, and other fields, that often have components of research of interest to physics and astronomy students. Rolf M. Sinclair Division of Physics ------------------------------------------------------------------------- DIVISION OF PHYSICS NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION REU SITES The following Sites will be active in 2001. Many will also be active in subsequent years. Contact the individual Sites directly for further information. Most of these Sites are based on the full range of research of the indicated departments or laboratories and include both experimental and theoretical activities. (A few of these contain projects in astronomy or astrophysics.) The remainder [marked (*)] are based mostly or completely on the research of a more specialized laboratory or facility, have a special topical focus, or are aimed mostly, but not exclusively, at groups currently under-represented in physics (as indicated). Inquire of each Site for the research areas included and for any such special emphases. Students are encouraged to consider other Sites as well, such as those in Materials, Chemistry, Biology, Computing, Engineering, Geology, and other fields, that often have components of research of interest to physics students. Taylor, Program Director: Tel. 703-292-8470; E-mail: reu.bio@nsf.gov The REU sites listed below have active programs for the summer of 2000. Students must contact the individual sites for application information and materials (NSF does not have application materials and does not select student participants). A contact person is listed for each site along with a telephone number and e-mail address. Individual sites may have specific eligibility requirements (e.g., number of undergraduate years completed) for applicants. The eligibility requirements for student participants are (NSF 96-102): Undergraduate student participants supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An undergraduate student is a student who is enrolled in a degree program (part-time or full-time) leading to a bachelor's degree. Students who are transferring from one institution to another and are enrolled at neither institution during the intervening summer may participate. High school graduates who have not yet enrolled and students who have received their bachelor's degrees and are no longer enrolled as undergraduates generally are not eligible. Interested students must contact the individual sites for application information and materials (NSF does not have application materials and does not select student participants). The Principal Investigator is listed for each site along with a telephone number and email address for that person. The general eligilibility requirements for student participants are as follows (NSF 96-102): Undergraduate student participants supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An undergraduate student is a student is a student who is enrolled in a degree program (full-time or part-time) leading to a bachelor’s degree. Students who are transferring from one institution to another and are enrolled at neither institution during the intervening summer may participate. High school graduates who have not yet enrolled and students who have received their bachelor’s degrees and are no longer enrolled as undergraduates generally are not eligible. In addition, individual sites may have specific restrictions (e.g., number of undergraduate years or courses completed) and requirements for applicants. Again, contact the individual sites for specific requirements and application materials. (NSF does not have application materials and does not select student participants.) A contact person is listed for each site along with a telephone number and e-mail address. Individual sites may have specific eligibility requirements (e.g., number of undergraduate years completed) for applicants. Undergraduate student participants supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions.
