Research Project: Replacement of Herbicides and Methyl Bromide by Microbiological Control of Weeds

Location: Southern Weed Science Research

Project Number: 6402-22000-036-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: May 17, 2000
End Date: May 16, 2005

Objective:
To discover and evaluate pathogens as bioherbicides of agronomic weeds and horticultural weeds formerly controlled by methyl bromide. To develop new formulations/adjuvants/synergists which overcome constraints that limit biocontrol potential such as moisture requirements and narrow host ranges. To optimize bioherbicide mass production. To conduct biochemical studies of weed pathogenesis by bioherbicides. To discover/identify/produce phytotoxins that could be used to produce safer herbicides.

Approach:
Conduct field searches to discover new candidate bioherbicidal pathogens and evaluate their biocontrol potential. Discover/improve methodology to mass-produce biocontrol pathogens. Develop/improve formulations such as vegetable oil emulsions, invert emulsions and/or chemical synergists which: 1) promote weed pathogenesis; 2) overcome environmental limitations; 3) expand or restrict host range. Discover chemical, biochemical, and physiological pathogen-weed relationships and interactions and determine mechanisms of weed resistance that may be manipulated to enhance biological control efficacy/potential of pathogens. Evaluate pathogens for production metabolites such as phytotoxins or other metabolites which may have potential use as weed control agents; if necessary, develop biologically safe analogs.
