The conjunctiva is a thin membrane that covers the surface of the inner eyelid and part of the eyeball. Inflammation of the conjunctiva is called conjunctivitis, which makes the white of the eye appear red. Update Date: 10/14/2003 Updated by: A.D.A.M. editorial.
