Definition    Return to top

Symptomatic can mean showing symptoms or concerning a symptom. Symptoms are indications of disease or injury and are usually noticed by the patient.

Many conditions and diseases have symptoms. A cough is a symptom of an upper respiratory infection. Pain is a symptom of a physical problem.

When someone has the common symptoms associated with a disease or condition, they are symptomatic. Likewise, when a disorder is present but no symptoms are exhibited, the patient is asymptomatic.
