WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. General Services Administration’s (GSA) Federal Technology Service (FTS) announced today that James A. Williams has been selected FTS Deputy Commissioner. The appointment was effective June 24, 2004.

“Jim brings a wide range of government experience and expertise to the job,” said FTS Commissioner Sandra N. Bates. “As Acting Deputy Commissioner, he has acquired a good understanding of our business lines very quickly and has made significant contributions to our organization in the relatively short time he has been with us. I am confident that he will prove to be an excellent addition to our FTS leadership team.”

Williams has served as Acting FTS Deputy Commissioner since October 2003. “FTS is an outstanding organization that provides critical services to the government and the American taxpayer, said Williams. “By offering efficient, effective products and services at the lowest possible cost, FTS enables agencies to focus on their core missions. I look forward to continuing to work with FTS associates, GSA leadership, customers, and industry partners.”

As Deputy Commissioner, Williams will serve as senior adviser to the FTS Commissioner and chief operating officer for all FTS program matters including policy development, program management for telecommunications, information technology solutions, professional services, and administrative programs.

Williams joined GSA as Deputy Regional Administrator for the National Capital Region (NCR) in 1986, and has held several executive-level positions including Assistant Commissioner for Public Buildings Service, Associate Regional Administrator for NCR, Deputy Regional Administrator for Greater Southwest Region, Acting Regional Administrator for the Mid-Atlantic Region, and Deputy Regional Administrator for the Mid-Atlantic Region.  He is a graduate of Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY.  He also attended the Graduate School of Business at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN.
